HISTORY
Methodism in the Lowveld started with the gold rush in Barberton. It is recorded that as early as 1887 the Methodist Minister in Barberton .. “was going from store to store to hold services”.
In later years, with a congregation established in Barberton, regular services were held at numerous venues including Nelspruit, White River and Alkmaar. The First recorded Society Steward in Nelspruit was Mr Greaves.
Growth in the Nelspruit area saw the establishment of a separate Circuit here in 1947. The Reverend Donald Barrett was Nelspruit’s first Minister, with the Barberton Minister as Superintendent of the Circuit and Mr G Fair as Circuit Steward. Rev Barrett did most of his visits by bicycle!
The first manse was built in Ferreira Street, opposite St Michael’s Anglican Church, but before the hall could be built a new and larger stand was offered by John Faurie on the corner of Paul Kruger and Louis Trichardt Streets in exchange for the first property. The foundation stone of this hall was laid by the then Superintendent Minister, Rev Dr J B Webb, during 1951.
The rapid growth of Nelspruit soon necessitated the purchase of a larger property. Three adjoining stands were purchased on the corner of Van der Merwe and Ferreira Streets, where the present Church complex is situated. Rev Dr Alex Borraine opened the Church in 1971.
A property, in West Acres, was recently purchased with the view of possible extension or relocation of our work and witness in the Town. Our present ministerial staff are Rev Don Williams, Rev Allan Booth and our youth leader, Chris Luyt.
